We mean that in the literal sense. Though people often refer to buying a new car as “getting a new set of wheels,” it’s often possible to make your existing car look and drive better by getting four new wheels to replace the factory set. Getting new, larger wheels is one of the quickest and most popular ways to upgrade the look of a vehicle, and the accompanying new tires can improve your car’s traction and handling.

Getting larger rims and tires for a vehicle is commonly known as “plus sizing tires.” The term can be a bit misleading, because the goal of plus sizing tires is to end up with the same circumference and height as the original set (so that they fit in the wheel well and so that the speedometer and gear ratios still work correctly). And since more of that height is taken up by the wheel, plus sizing tires results in slimmer-looking tires with shorter sidewalls. The tires are also wider, though, with more tread area to grip the road.

The wider tread gives you more traction, which improves braking and reduces wheel slip. Combined with the shorter, stiffer sidewall, it also allows you to turn more sharply and have better steering responsiveness.

Properly plus sizing tires does require a bit of math, to ensure that the new tires will have the same height and circumference as the original tires. Wheel rims are measured in inches, while tire width is measured in millimeters; sidewall height is given as a percentage of the tire’s width. So not only do you have to convert between millimeters and inches, but you also have to figure out how much shorter the sidewall needs to be and what percentage that is of the new, larger width.

Now it probably is true that most people are safe drivers, at least most of the time. The problem is that there are times and situations when even a safe driver is no longer safe. It could be the result of drowsiness or momentary distractions, or there could be a situation that requires quicker reflexes and a faster reaction time than normal.

That’s where the new technology of driver-assistance features comes in. These features give the driver a hand in potentially dangerous situations, alerting you to the problem or even taking steps to keep you safe. Driver-assistance features are somewhat like insurance, kicking in only when needed and preventing small problems from becoming catastrophic mistakes.

Driver-assistance features come in several forms:

• Blind-spot information systems warn you about objects near your vehicle that you otherwise cannot see.
• Adaptive cruise control will reduce your speed when coming up on a slow-moving vehicle.
• Lane departure warning systems provide a warning if you begin drifting out of your lane, which will also serve to wake you up if the drifting was caused by drowsiness.
• Vehicle stability control, along with features such as traction control and electronic brake-force distribution, keep the driver in control by preventing skids or spinning wheels. They go beyond what the driver can do alone, by individually adjusting the brakes or power to each wheel and doing so at computer-fast speeds.

Many other driver-assistance features are in development by companies such as Toyota and Ford. Though still a long way out from having a Knight Rider-like vehicle that can drive itself, these advances do help make safe drivers even safer and help to protect you from those few not-so-safe drivers on the road.
